Just Hangin' Around

Or should I say "hangerin'" around!

I've been busy this week.  Between packing for our big move, and making all of these orders:

... there hasn't been a whole lot of time for anything else!

I had four orders come in yesterday alone!  It's very exciting...

Did I tell you that we started giving Little Bug Organic Brown Rice Cereal this month?

Let's just say that a theme for my life lately is Messy!!!

ps... what do you think about the new Blog Header?  Like it?!

Launching Better Life Bags Inc

This post is what is at the CORE of Better Life Bags.  This is why we exist...
post by Neil Smith  (aka.... Mr. Bug)

The story of Better Life Bags blows me away some times.  Becky got a sewing machine for her birthday (a year ago today!) and decided to make herself a diaper bag.  She posted the pictures on Facebook and BOOM, a never ending string of orders (we have now filled 54 orders).

I am amazed at Becky's natural talent for sewing.  I am amazed at her ability to pick out great fabric patterns for our inventory.  I am amazed at her design abilities.  I am amazed when I repeatedly ask her where she got the idea for a bag and she says,

"ohh, I saw one in a store that I liked so I decided to make on like it and tweek it a little"
or,
"I just thought of the idea in my head."

I think that Becky has found her calling.  Perhaps she should have stuck with her original college major (Fashion Design).

I am also amazed by her commitment to customer service and quality.  It has always been her policy that it is better to take the time to make it right (even if it means starting over on something) than to let a customer receive a less than amazing product.

I have watched Becky take all sorts of requests for new bags and customizations of bags that she has never done before and take the time to figure them out and produce an excellent product (though she always makes a practice one first because of her devotion to quality).

I have also been amazed by the wonderful customers, friends and fans who have been supporting her through wonderful and needed feedback and encouragement.  Thank you all so much.

What amazes me more though is the way that I have seen God's hand in this the whole way through.  He truly makes all things work together for the good for those who love him and are called according to his purpose.

God gave Becky a heart for the poor while she was in college and she lived out that calling during a year in Bakersfield, CA where she followed the model of our master Jesus but dwelling among those in need, proclaiming good news to the poor, and meeting the needs she saw along the way.

Also, during my time in Iraq with the Army, God gave me a heart to learn to build real peace with Muslims.  I saw that the kind peace Jesus meant when he said "blessed are the peacemakers" can never come at the barrel of the gun but instead through relationships built by people who know God's love.

It was around the time when these passions had become fully grown in both of us that God introduced us to each other.  We have had the pleasure of spending our dating relationship, our engagement, our first 2 years of marriage, and the birth of our first child all while living in a wonderfully encouraging community where our faith has been strengthened.

 However, recently we have felt a stronger and stronger pull to live out the call that God has put in us... BOTH to be like Jesus to the poor AND our work with Better Life Bags.

We know a couple in Michigan, living in a predominately Muslim community, intentionally building relationships with their neighbors.  They try to meet the needs of the immigrants in the community who are disadvantaged educationally and economically.
In one particular neighborhood where they live, about half of the population is foreign born, about 1/3 of the population lives under the poverty line, and the housing values have fallen by about 80%.  They have bought a house here and are starting a new school to meet specific needs in the community.

As we talked to them and thought more about our calling, we began to pray for an opportunity to get involved in a business.  We believe that if real change is going to happen in these communities, there will have to be job creation.

It was at the this time that Better Life Bags started to form.  Better Life Bags has always been involved in alleviating poverty through Kiva.org but we have yearned for more.  We feel like God is calling us to make a big, scary leap into His mission, so we will be moving to Michigan to a very poor, mostly Muslim, immigrant neighborhood.

 We will buy a house and fix it up to help remove a tiny bit of plight (which means LOTS of DIY and Before/After blog posts in the near future)!!

We will launch Better Life Bags full time as a non-profit organization in order to create jobs through commerce.  As the company grows, the revenues that we bring in above our operating costs will all be reinvested in the neighborhood through community service projects.

We thank you all for your support so far and hope that you will continue to be a part of our Better Life Bag Team as we take this next step.

Love, Neil and Rebecca Smith

One of THOSE days...

It's been one of those days at the Smith House.  You know what I'm talking about, right?

The kind where your son is cranky for no apparent reason.  The kind where he decides it would be fun to stay up long stretches between naps and then only sleep for 50 minutes when he does nap.  The kind where you almost Fed Ex him to Grandparents, but instead decide just to let him play with the packaging because he's happy doing it.  (don't worry, there was parental supervision with this envelope)

So, this is where we spent most of our day today.

Yep, on the curb.

It was a beautiful day in Savannah, thankfully.  And chunker-thighs here loves being outside.

He has since he was a newborn.
(well this picture was at 5 weeks, but he has loved it for as long as I can remember)

We just sat out there together watching the cars go by.  It really was peaceful.  And quiet.  Which is what I desperately needed for 30 minutes.

There weren't enough cars to keep his attention for very long, though.  Could someone please orchestrate a parade on the street in front of our apartment?  It would be greatly appreciated.

Right, Little Bug?

We'll be waiting...

Keeping an eye out for the parade.

And when the weather started to get a little cold, I simulated the outside environment (with the help of a large sliding glass door and a Bumbo seat... oh, and the fun entertainment of a cardboard box).

Tell me, please, what do you do when you're having "one of those days"?

HoneyBear Lane

Something came in the mail yesterday that is SUPER CUTE!  I special ordered it for a baby shower coming up.  And I knew just who I'd ask to make it for me:

Heidi from HoneyBear Lane!

You guys seriously need to go check out her stuff.  Not only is it really cute and really affordable, she's really quick and professional!  The onesie came packaged so nice and cute with a personal thank you note... don't get those much more these days.

Isn't it adorable?!

Here are some items she has for sale in her shop:

This one has a matching apron skirt that every girl I know needs!

Isn't this one sweet for a little girl?
OR ask her to embroider something like "Chicks DIG Me" for your little guy!
She's great with custom ideas!

 Her embroidery is done by hand and is just exquisite!  I'm so impressed.

I just know that your little person needs a handmade onesie from her, right?  If you haven't bought handmade before, Heidi will surely get you hooked!  Who wants their little people walking around in the same outfit as 100 other kids?!  Didn't think so... :)

She has long sleeve and short sleeve options, as well as sizes up to 3T!

Here is my all time favorite item of hers... I'm saving up my money and trying to decide on a color scheme I'd like her make!

How gorgeous is this blanket?!  She hand stuffs each little puff.

Heidi, you make awesome stuff.

... and tell her Better Life Bags sent you!

Patchwork Shower Curtain

So, for the month of February, I've been redoing our bathroom upstairs.

You've seen me get rid of excess products so far.

I just finished updating or plain white shower curtain.

This seriously cost me $5.

All I did was cut different sizes of squares in two different patterns.  I ironed in all the edges 1/2 inch (so it wouldn't fray), pinned them to the curtain, and sewed them on!
I love how it looks to brighten up our small bathroom!

Some wall art is coming soon... as soon as the necessary piece finds it's way to my house via snail mail!

Gift for Hubby

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mr. Bug LOVES Swedish Fish.  I do too, so this gift was especially hard because I found myself sneaking them before I had given it to him!  (confession... I even had to go back to the store to buy more since there was a noticeable "mouse" getting into them).
I made this for him for Valentine's Day, but it could be an easy/quick gift for any guy - any time!
I just got out a glass container we used at our wedding (for a candy bar)
(see them in the right corner?)
but... you could easily just go buy a NEW fish bowl at the store!
I then dumped two movie size boxes of Nerds in the bottom (to resemble fish gravel) and a 3 pound bag of Swedish Fish (found at Target) on top.  After I poured them in, I thought they looked kind of like a pile of dead fish, but I tried to ignore that as much as I could!
Using Photoshop, I printed off a tag that said "You're my Favorite Fish in the Sea!", tied it around using twine (my favorite crafting accessory of all time) and tied a few pieces of ribbon around the lid.  I also found a packet of fish stickers in the Target Scrapbooking Dollar Section (have you checked that out, yet?!?  awesome stuff) and put some of the outside and some on the back of the jar. Easy.
He loved it.
Two days later, there are no more Swedish Fish.  Yes, we ate all 3 pounds.  ... yikes!
Personalized Yahtzee Game
These are our friends
These are our friends on wooden cubes
What for?
Why, A Personalized Yahtzee Game, of course!
Some friends of ours are obsessed with the game Yahtzee.  And since Bug and I were getting together with two other couples to play a game (the Yahtzee freaks being one of them), I decided to make a personalized Yahtzee game for us to play and them to keep!
I got the idea from this gal. (A tutorial is on her site!)
It could easily be adapted for a family - all you need are six pictures, wooden cubes, a storage box, mod podge, and some scrapbooking paper.
It added a whole new element to Yahtzee when you hear someone say, "Well, I got two Josh's, a Mandy, and two Ashley's!"  We even made up new rules.  For example, if you roll a Yahtzee of your own picture, you get 100 points!  Or, if you roll a Full House of a married couple, you get 50 points!
SO easy, SO cute, and SO fun to play!
